Steering clear of the pesky 'Malandragem' on a trip to Brazil by Dehouche Travel

Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about Brazil is that Brazilians speak Spanish and a sure fire way to get off on the wrong foot in Brazil is to assume just this and start jabbering away in your best GCSE Espanhol to that seemingly friendly immigration officer. They may be able to understand what you say, but that doesn’t mean that they will be pleased, or grant you with the stamp in your passport you had been hoping for.

Brazilians will joke that foreigners will go as far as to believe that Buenos Aires is the capital of Brazil. However, when you take into account that the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is akin to that between France and England, you begin to realize that this is in fact no laughing matter.

Many people travel to Latin America with a smattering of Spanish and find that this suffices to meet their needs. Portuguese is a language the majority of foreign visitors have no former knowledge of and to the untrained ear it can sound indecipherable, even to those who speak another language with Latin roots.

Attempting to learn a few phrases before your trip will always help to make your visit more enjoyable. Brazilians themselves complain that Portuguese is a difficult language and they will appreciate any effort you make to communicate. Unfortunately, it is a difficult language and so you may soon find yourself disheartened.

For a foreigner hoping to learn enough key phrases to survive a week or two’s holiday, the most likely difficulty you will encounter will be pronunciation. The trick is to hold your nose as you speak, but this may draw the very attention you had been hoping to avoid.

For starters try the following:

Bom dia (Bong jee-a)
Good morning

Rio de Janeiro (Hee-o, jee, ja-ney-roo)
Rio de Janeiro

Não (Nown)
No
Brazilians almost never say ‘yes’ either repeating the verb used by the speaker or saying ‘isso’, literally meaning ‘that’.

Whether you’re looking for the right bathroom or trying to explain your sexual preferences, these two words may come in handy:

Mulher (Mool-yair)
Woman

Homem (o- meing)
Man

Feeling hungry? Try these two:
Brigadeiro (Bree-ga-dey-roo)
Yummy chocolate and condensed milk treat

Açaí (A-sai-yee)
Delicious Amazon berry usually served mixed with all kinds of other calorific goodness.

Unfortunately, in parts of Brazil more popular with tourists such as Rio and Bahia, there’s another word that’s difficult to say, but important to know and that’s ‘malandragem’, (ma-lan-dra-jeing) which is basically the act of taking advantage of someone. A ‘Malandro’ (someone who practices malandragem for a living) will be quick to spot a gringo accent and the consequences can leave you somewhat bereft.

Malandros come in all shapes and forms and simply taking a taxi from the airport can result in being led very much up the garden path, as you are taken on the most scenic route possible. Even if your driver adheres to the recognized route, the rule goes that the stronger your accent, the higher the fare.

But what can you do to avoid such pitfalls? Do you need to become fluent in the language before you visit in order not to leave the country a bankrupt? Fortunately not; take a tailor made holiday with luxury travel specialists Dehouche and they can arrange private transfers with English speaking drivers for you throughout your holiday, thus removing the need to get into difficulty before you have even left the airport. Dehouche have relationships with unique and fun local people who will in fact help to smooth over those language difficulties for you, whilst still allowing you to gain an insight into the culture.

Of course, just because Dehouche can provide English speaking guides and drivers doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t still have a go at Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation. Dehouche themselves will provide you with a list of up to date useful words and phrases. The difference is that if you do run into difficulty, key Dehouche staff around the country are on hand to help you find a ‘jeitinho’ (Jay-cheen-yo) or ‘Brazilian way out’ of that miscalculated restaurant bill/interminable queue/undeserved parking ticket (delete as applicable)

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your honeymoon.

National air travel in Brazil is easier with a helping hand says Dehouche

Brazil is a country of epic proportions, spanning several different time zones and encompassing a microcosm of cultures; from the European-esque South, to the pulsating cosmopolitan metropolis of Sao Paulo and its seductive rival Rio de Janeiro, to the laid back North East of endless paradisiacal beaches, the wetlands of the Pantanal and the world’s largest rainforest. Not forgetting mountains ranges dotted with colonial towns, (half of) one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, vast expanses of semi arid desert and the endless sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is actually several countries in one. If you hope to see just a glimpse of Brazil’s immense diversity, how best to navigate it’s enormity? One word keeps cropping up in my research and that word is “Dehouche”!

Unfortunately, Brazil does not yet boast a high speed train network to sweep you effortlessly from one end of the country to the other and with single states larger than many countries in Europe, taking a bus is not something you really want to contemplate. Nevertheless, Brazil has the largest number of airports after the US and recent years have seen a surge of new air carriers appear, both increasing choice and lowering the cost for Luxury travelers and Honeymooners. So, all you need is a few web addresses and you can plan your interstate adventure, right? If only it were so easy….

As in Europe, the earlier you book, the more favorable the prices. However, booking online in Brazil involves Brazilian quantities of bureaucracy and is not for the faint hearted. Without a Brazilian address, post code, credit card and CPF (social security) number, you’ll probably find yourself uttering expletives at the computer screen, unable to make it even as far as entering your card details as ‘required fields’ keep you firmly grounded at home under grey skies.

Fortunately, luxury travel experts Dehouche have been based in Rio for the last ten years know all too well what is to suffer at the hands of Brazilian bureaucracy and are on hand to help. Book your international flights to Brazil and Dehouche will take care of the rest; handling flight itineraries, keeping on top of last minute changes and making sure those airline companies have got your all important middle name spelt correctly, so you don’t spend the rest of your life banging your head against the check in desk, yet another victim of inflexible administration systems.

Let Dehouche take care of those ‘required fields’ and all you need to do is turn up with your e-ticket number and breeze through to the boarding lounge. From spectacular Honeymoons in Brazil to luxury family vacations in Argentina Dehouche have it all in hand so that visitors to this wonderful continent can just relax enjoy themselves.

Honeymoon Destinations

Honeymoon Destinations

Take a trip on the wild side with Dehouche

For many people a visit to a country isn’t complete without taking in some of the country’s natural wonders and a spot of wildlife spotting. Especially for busy city dwellers, what better escape from the daily grind than a few days in a remote lodge (preferably far from mobile masts and WiFi), watching Mother Nature go about her millennial routine in one of the world’s remaining great wildernesses? Number one South American authority and luxury travel obsessive’s Dehouche specialize in fabulous luxury Honeymoons and family holidays, right across the continent and will usually recommend guests spend some time in the great outdoors on one of their exclusive tailor made itineraries.

Most ‘package’ tours to Brazil traditionally sent their tourists off on a well worn route between the Amazon and the Iguaçu falls, but from the Flamingos on Bolivia’s salt flats, to jaguars in Brazil’s interior, South America has a lot more to offer, and finding just the right region let alone accommodation can be even more of an arduous task than picking the perfect safari lodge in Africa. This is why Dehouche Travel is based in South America the team at this progressive company are continually researching and updating their recommendations to reflect the absolute pinnacle of luxury travel across the Latin American continent.

The Amazon is often top of many travelers’ list, largely because they’ve heard of it, and whilst the region has certainly been the backdrop to some truly memorable adventures, it is also a very long way away from anywhere (5 hours in a jet from Rio de Janeiro) and the ‘luxury’ lodges tend to be huge tourist machines, a million miles from the remote yet sophisticated tree house of the brochure, not to mention the most exciting creature you’re likely to see is the spider in your bathroom – the monkeys, parrots, anacondas etc. are there, just fiendishly difficult to spot in the thick vegetation of a rainforest, if it’s actually wildlife you are after, it’s best to look elsewhere. Dehouche like to steer their clients instead to one of the continent’s great wetlands, positively teeming with all manner of beast and fowl, not mention a considerably more tempting range of lodging options to come back to and lay down your binoculars at the end of the day.

Brazil’s Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, and the only place in Brazil with a real chance of seeing Jaguars (be warned they are still very rare though), Dehouche clients fly in by light aircraft to a private fazenda in a spectacular spot in the bend of a river, being friends with the owners means guests are treated more like welcome house guests, but the service and food is still streets ahead of the bigger lodges. Aside from the abundant nature on your doorstep – giant river otters can be seen fishing at the bottom of the garden, and rhea freely wander the immediate grounds of the farmhouse – this is one of the best lodges to spot jaguars, the owner personally photographs and keeps track of all of the individual cats in the surrounding territory, as part of an ongoing conservation project. The surroundings are that of gorgeous wilderness and provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic Honeymoon in Brazil.

As Luck would have it the world’s second largest wetland is also to be found in South America, the northern tip of Argentina is home to the Esteros del Ibera, a literal birding paradise (some 350 species), and last refuge for many of Argentina’s endangered species. Again a light aircraft is the order of the day to penetrate right into the heart of the wetlands, for those heading from the north you can even take in the Iguaçu falls from the air on the way – spectacular! Finally it’s also one of the most exciting fly-fishing spots on the continent, home to the much sought after Golden Dorado, prized for its aggressive fighting on the line, anglers fly to the region from all over the world for the chance to fish them, some of which can way up to 25 pounds. Dehouche arrange complete fishing trips, with local bilingual guides to make sure you have the best chance of landing one (or several). So whatever else you do in South America whether it’s the beaches of Brazil or the steak houses of Buenos Aires, do make sure to take in one of the great areas of wilderness which will provide many lifelong memories from your Honeymoon or holiday vacation in Latin America, oh, and don’t forget to contact the experts at Dehouche to make sure you get the best of the best.

A Diverse Brazilian Honeymoon by Dehouche

For those people who want more variety and adventure on their honeymoon than just sitting on the beach, Rio based South America experts Dehouche are the talented fixers to turn to (although they are likely to recommend that you spend some of your time on Brazil’s fabulous beaches!). An example of the sort of trip that they can put together would perhaps see the lucky couple start their honeymoon with two nights in Salvador, a fascinating city with a vibrant African culture that is felt in everything from its music to its exotic cuisine. The hotel, one of the best luxury hotels in Brazil, is an immaculately converted convent with an ideal position in the heart of the historical centre, a very romantic stop for the first couple of days of the honeymoon. Dehouche will arrange for a short walking tour of the ‘Pelourinho’ with their fabulous guide Gabriela who will ensure a fun time and an inside track on the colourful history and culture of this one time capital of Brazil.

Honeymooners might then head inland for four days in the Chapada Diamantina national park, which is a little off the beaten track and gives a taste of the relaxed pace of life in the Brazilian interior. Here one resides in the sleepy colonial town of Lencois, Dehouche select another one of their fantastic guides this time it might be Ronald who would look after guests for the duration of their stay in this remote landscape for the whole stay, Ronald tailors excursions to the personal preferences of the clients – just as it should be. Daily excursions can be treks and picnics on tabletop mountains, swimming in crystal clear streams and waterfalls. In this unique spot one can be as active or not as one likes, and anything can be organised from mountain biking to horse riding and from rock climbing to caving. The hotel is a reselected is a gem, with a very charismatic owner and most importantly a very impressive breakfast spread to give energy for the day ahead!

On return to Salvador, the next location might involve a flight south to the village of Trancoso, on the palm tree lined ‘Discovery Coast’. Trancoso has a great atmosphere, and although very trendy with the jet set of Rio and Sao Paulo, as well as in-the-know international travellers, it has lost none of its charm as a supremely laid back Bahian beach village. Lucky Dehouche Honeymoon couples stay in a luxurious villa at the Uxua hotel, beautifully peaceful and secluded set in tropical gardens, but none the less right where one wants to be on the quadrado, with the combination of chic restaurants, bars and artists studios set in the traditional brightly coloured fisherman’s houses. Uxua also has a large private area and cocktail bar down on the beach. Dehouche arrange for a jeep during the stay – lots of fun to potter down the coast visiting the many secluded coves and simple villages, where there are endless beaches and little restaurants serving up great seafood.

After a good 5 or 6 nights in Trancoso why not continue south to Rio for three nights in the superb Fasano hotel right on Ipanema beach front. This is without a doubt the best luxury hotel in the city, lucky guests will have a Dehouche selected favourite suite with a balcony looking out over Ipanema beach. It has the largest rooftop swimming pool in Rio, where the spa is also housed looking out down the Ipanema and Leblon seafronts. It also has one of Rio’s best restaurants, first class Italian style seafood. Honeymooners will have a personalized tour with our guide Leonardo the Dehouche expert guide, as throughout the Honeymoon couples will have the benefit of the Dehouche list of recommendations, and their 24 hour concierge service is on hand to organise anything at the last minute - from restaurant bookings to helicopter trips.

Finally why not finish the Honeymoon in style on the stunning beaches of the Costa Verde, the Atlantic rainforest covered coastline between Rio and Sao Paulo. Stay in a charming boutique pousada, just on the edge of a little fishing village with beautiful views down the coast. Set up just above the beach, and the hotel has a large swimming pool and deck area. As well as being a very comfortable and stylish place to finish the honeymoon, it is also a great look at the ‘real’ rural coastal Brazilian life. It is an excellent place to spend several days, as aside from relaxing and enjoying the hotel’s spa services or many beaches of the coastline, there is plenty else to do; walks to waterfalls in the surrounding rainforest, kayaking or snorkelling trips, visiting islands and deserted beaches a thoroughly charming spot in which to finish a wonderful Honeymoon in Brazil

Minas

What do you think of when you think of Brazil? Beaches thronging with beautiful people? Outrageous Carnival costumes? Deserted, unspoilt beaches? The seductive beat of Samba? Beaches backed by lush tropical rainforest? Being blessed with 7000km of coastline, much of which enjoys what most Europeans would consider year round summer weather, it’s perhaps difficult not to think of beaches when you think of Brazil.

What do you think of when you think of Brazil? Beaches thronging with beautiful people? Outrageous Carnival costumes? Deserted, unspoilt beaches? The seductive beat of Samba? Beaches backed by lush tropical rainforest? Being blessed with 7000km of coastline, much of which enjoys what most Europeans or Americans would consider year round warm summer weather it is difficult not to think just of beaches when you think of Brazil.

However, it’s too easy to overlook the many other treasures this vast country has concealed within. Venture slightly inland from the state of Rio de Janeiro and you will discover the lesser known state of ‘Minas Gerais’; deservedly considered the gastronomic capital of Brazil and larger than the entire country of France, yet surprisingly absent from the itinerary of many international visitors.

Minas is the country’s largest producer of cheese and luxury travel experts Dehouche can assure you that once you’ve tried the ‘Pao de Queijo’ (Brazilian cheese bread) to be found in Minas, you’ll no longer be content with that made in any other state of Brazil.

The state of Minas Gerais (or General Mines) began to be populated in the late seventeenth century when colonists flocked here in search of gold. Exploiting the region and the slaves they had brought from Africa, they mined for minerals and beautiful towns were built on the fruits of others labour.

Particularly well preserved examples of the unique ‘Barroco Mineiro’ style that developed during this period are the towns of Ouro Preto, Diamantina, Sabara, Tiradentes and São João del Rei, nestled amongst the Mineiro mountains. It may sound remote, but if you’re looking to genuinely escape on your honeymoon or well earned holiday, locally based Dehouche can easily arrange flights and transfers here from other destinations in Brazil.

Let your private driver navigate the winding roads and descend peacefully upon an oasis of tradition and unspoilt splendour. Take your time enjoying the culinary delights this region is famed for, explore the abundance of richly decorated churches and marvel at the oeuvre of renowned Aleijadinho.

Wandering up and down the steep, cobbled streets of these picturesque towns it’s difficult to imagine the suffering and sacrifice that went into their construction. However, for those who are interested, there are many museums dedicated to telling the stories of centuries gone by.

One particular gem of the region must be ‘Ouro Preto’, which at the height of mining exploration was the capital of the state itself and is today still an important university town with many ‘republicas’ or university halls of residence scattered about. Needless to say, the town enjoys quite a vibrant nightlife as a result. Today, Minas is perhaps better known for its festivities and carnival celebrations, which focus around traditional street parties, quite unlike the carefully choreographed samba shows of Rio. Minas may lack the glamour of Rio and the pace of life may seem trapped in time compared to that of São Paulo, but it’s more than testament to the fact that there is not one Brazil, but many.

Honeymoon in the Pantanal Brazil's other great wilderness

Most people assume that the best place in Brazil to observe animals is the Amazon; they are sadly mistaken in this assessment - that honour belongs to the 140,000 square kilometre (54,000 square mile) Pantanal, which straddles the borders of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, but the majority of which lies in Brazil. The Pantanal is a tropical wetland and the world’s largest inland swamp; it is therefore a vital natural habitat that is home to an extraordinarily diverse range of flora and fauna. The huge inundation of water during the rainy season, and subsequent drainage during the dry season, allows a vast array of plants to thrive in the Pantanal, ranging from Amazonian rainforest plants to plants normally found on arid Bolivian savannahs; the ecosystem supports 3500 known plant species. It is also home to 1000 bird species, 400 different types of fish (including golden dourado, peacock bass and of course piranhas), 480 species of reptiles including caimans and 300 kinds of mammals like the giant river otters, howler monkey, crab eating fox and the illusive jaguar.

Another advantage that the Pantanal has over the Amazon is that it offers much higher standards of accommodation. There are plenty of Fazendas scattered throughout the region and some of these have been turned into very comfortable lodges. Rio based English travel company, Dehouche, book their clients into an utterly charming lodge deep in the Pantanal, which was only reachable by light aircraft from the city of Campo Grande. The flight itself was a great adventure and provided incredible views over this seemingly endless landscape. Upon arriving at the lodge we were greeted by the very hospitable owners, given a refreshing caipirinha and shown to our lovely bedroom. All food and drinks were included during our stay, as were all of the activities on offer - such as horse riding, canoeing, hiking and even astronomy, the clear night skies providing the most impressive views of the milky way that I have ever been fortunate enough to witness. When combined with Rio, the Iguacu Falls and the beaches of the Costa Verde, such as the itinerary that Dehouche put together for us, the Pantanal makes for a phenomenal honeymoon destination.

Florianopolis is a city that straddles the mainland of southern Brazil and the island Ilha de Santa Catarina, a 45 km long island. It is this island people are generally referring to when they mention Florianopolis. Whether you are after rustic fishing villages and deserted beaches, international cuisine, world class watersports or buzzing nightclubs - or indeed all of the above! - then this is the ideal destination for your honeymoon or luxury vacation.

Upon arriving at the international airport it is essential to hire a car if you intend to discover several parts of this diverse island. I would recommend heading south to begin with, away from the majority of holiday makers. Even in high season, which effectively runs from New Year's Eve to Carnival, there will be very few other people on the delightfully secluded beaches. However, the real highlight here is the fresh seafood, and in particular the mouth watering oysters that are delivered straight from the ocean to your table. The only drawback of this part of the island is that it has no top quality accommodation, so after spending a day exploring the coves and fishing villages it is best to head up to the centre of the island.

There are lots of good hotels around the Lagoa de Conceicao. This is also where the best restaurants are located and it is therefore the ideal spot to stay for a couple of nights. Dehouche, the Rio based British run luxury tour operator compiles tailor made honeymoon itinerary, have access to a few very exclusive villas here that lead down onto the Lagoa. They can even organise for a boat to be moored at the pier for the duration one stays in the luxury villa. If windsurfing is your thing, then few places rival the opportunities provided by the Lagoa and it’s especially good for beginners, and the sea off Praia Mole should prove challenging for the experts. Praia Mole is a beach on the East side of the island that always has good surf and is a favourite local hangout. There are several excellent bars along the beach and you can happily spend a couple of days relaxing in this mid section of the island.

For the final leg of the honeymoon, Dehouche recommended another 5 star villa by a beach to the North called Jurere Internacional, a town on the north west corner of the island. This is where the famed beach clubs of Florianopolis are located and afternoons are spent eating fresh seafood and sipping exotic cocktails while listening to world class DJs. Watching the sun go down in one of these incredible beach clubs is the ideal way to conclude a Brazilian honeymoon on the beautiful Ilha de Santa Catarina.

Brazil's Buzios peninsula is an ideal Honeymoon location

If you’re looking for a relaxed, romantic destination for your honeymoon, where you can find stunning scenery and secluded beaches combined with excellent restaurants and luxury accommodation, you need look no further than Búzios.

Situated just 105 miles north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, this beautiful peninsula was originally settled by pirates and slave traders. However, following the arrival of Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s the peninsula was transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a luxury resort, attracting international visitors, and earning itself the label ‘The St Tropez of Brazil’.

Luxury travel experts, Dehouche, based in nearby Rio are on hand to provide transfers from Rio’s international airport and organise everything on the ground for you. Dehouche work with a number of select boutique hotels; from the unfailingly popular ‘Casa Brancas’ to other lesser known, yet equally luxurious, pousadas, hidden away on quieter streets as well as a number of high quality beach villas fully equipped with staff and speedboats.

The peninsula of Búzios boasts twenty four different beaches and as such there is really something for everyone. From the more exposed beaches on the east side, popular with water sports enthusiasts, to the calm clear waters of those on the west. To explore the peninsula properly, let your concierge at Dehouche organise a beach buggy for you.

One of the most popular beaches has to be Geribá, a 4km stretch of golden sand, frequented by a young crowd, who at sundown crowd into the lively ‘fishbone’ bar to take full advantage of the happy hour.

If you prefer to find a quieter spot on your honeymoon, try ‘Praia do Forno’. Unlike its neighbour ‘Praia Brava’, which is popular with surfers, ‘Forno’ is protected from the angry sea, nestled in a picturesque cove and is a particularly tranquil spot.

On the opposite side of the peninsula, ‘Praia Tartaruga’ is perfectly situated to enjoy the sunset and it’s beautifully clear waters make it ideal for diving. Straying further from the main resort, ‘Praia de Manguinhos’ is a great place to try windsurfing. Ask Dehouche to help you arrange lessons or equipment hire.

At weekends, Búzios fills with the well heeled of Rio who flock here to enjoy not only the 24 beaches, but also the 24 hour party scene from beaches to club nightlife Búzios offers. For some, this means dancing into the wee hours at world famous Ibiza chain ‘Pacha’; for others taking advantage of the seemingly infinite shopping opportunities and for others, enjoying a more sedate dinner at one of the many charming restaurants that line the pretty cobbled streets of ‘Rua das Pedras’ and ‘Orla Bardot’.

The peninsula is geographically blessed and somehow manages to enjoy year round sunshine; reputedly enjoying twice the number of sunny days per year as the city of Rio itself. With an average year round temperature of 26c, there’s no real off season in Búzios. However, if you’re in search of peace on your honeymoon, Dehouchesay they recommend visiting outside the busier summer season, which runs from December to March.

Brazil Honeymoons can be combined to include a wonderful experience of the Amazon

The mere mention of the name of the world’s largest rainforest conjures up exotic images of intrepid Victorian explorers venturing off into the unknown on great patriotic journeys to tropical lands. Although this once almost mythical jungle is obviously much more accessible these days, it still retains a great deal of mystery and is often referred to as the ‘last great wildernesses’. There are numerous tribes who have rarely come into contact with the modern world, and quite probably some who still never have. On most days fishermen land catches never before catalogued by science. This is not surprising when one considers the vast scale of the ecosystem: 5.5 million square kilometers’ or 1.4 billion acres, which is the equivalent to 5.6 billion tennis courts - a game played here might even tire out the great Roger Federer! It is well known that deforestation is a huge danger to the Amazon, which is why it is important when visiting this spectacular wilderness that you book your trip through accredited responsible travel agents, such as Dehouche Travel, a luxury British run agent based in Brazil. Fortunately the rate of deforestation appears to be slowing, but this is still a threat that we must all be aware of and take seriously.

The itineraries which Dehouche assemble are luxury trips and Honeymoons but do include the best of the Amazon and can involve staying 4 nights deep in the Rainforest. After spending several days on the beautiful island of Fernando de Noronha, fly into Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state and a city of 1.5 million souls. Here we went on a fascinating tour, which included a visit to the fabulous Opera House on the banks of the river. We then returned to the airport and boarded a seaplane for the flight of a lifetime over the Amazon; cruising at 600 feet we got a proper impression of the vast scale of the place, before touching down in style on a river beside our utterly remote jungle lodge. Our private chalet was rustic but very comfortable, and all food and activities were included during our stay. The activities ranged from kayaking to fishing for native piranhas to visiting native villages, and much more besides; one evening we went out with torches to try and spot caimans - reptiles which are indigenous to the Amazon.

When combined with a few days in Rio de Janeiro and a week on the glorious beaches of Brazil’s north east, as Dehouche did for our honeymoon itinerary, a trip to an Amazonian jungle lodge contributes to the honeymoon of a lifetime.

A Brazil Honeymoon is not for shopping, well unless you visit Sao Paulo!

Shopping centres are to São Paulo what beaches are to Rio; a place to pass endless hours of leisure time, meeting friends, drinking beer and discovering potential new love interests. That’s not say that Paulistanos don’t take shopping seriously. São Paulo is the undisputed capital of shopping in Latin America and quite possibly a contender for the world title.

However, to the uninitiated, it’s difficult to know where to start in this megatropolis, especially if you don’t have excesses of time, so why not let luxury travel specialists Dehouche arrange a tailor made tour with a local guide and get straight to the boutiques worshipped by the locals themselves.

São Paulo is home to the shopping mecca of ‘Daslu’, sandwiched between a super highway and a shantytown with a helipad on the roof, this ode to consumerism, where a t-shirt easily costs more than the country’s minimum wage, has to some extent become a symbol of the economic injustice in Brazil and in recent years, shrouded in controversy due to allegations of tax evasion.

Nevertheless, a visit here is quite a unique experience, if only to ponder at the absurdity of it all. The exclusive home of Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton and Valentino in Brazil and frequented by the likes of Gisele Bundchen and Brazilian football star Ronaldo, the only possible way to arrive is by private car or taxi (or of course, helicopter) Let the doormen sweep you inside the revered ‘villa’ and so your journey into another world begins. The $50 million mansion is home to 120 designer boutiques and is renowned for its service; staff float unobtrusively yet attentively, something quite unique in a country anyone working on commission will traditionally pounce upon you the moment you enter the shop.

Certainly, this approach seems to appeal to Brazil’s elite who have made Sampa their home and ‘Daslu’ their stomping ground; however, if you’re not willing to pay $2000 for a pair of jeans, jump back in your limo and let Dehouche’s guide show you where you can get retail therapy at a more earthly price visiting up and coming designers actually in their studios and getting first bibs on items bound fr the European boutiques – the Dehouche shopping expert Luiza knows how to haggle and get the best bargain in the best craft shops too – time to start worrying about excess baggage!

Luxury Honeymoon - getting off track in Brazil by Dehouche Travel

The small state of Alagoas boasts arguably the most pristine coastline of all Brazil, with endless miles of empty beaches. Picturesque drives north of the state capital, the only signs of civilisation are sleepy fishing villages. The sea here is warm and crystal clear and the reefs form many natural swimming pools of turquoise for you to enjoy as the tide goes out. Alternatively, you can simply lrelax with a drink on the paradisiacal beach just a few yards away from your private villa. This is where you can truly kick back, relax and enjoy the easy-going, Brazilian pace of life

The luxury boutique hotel contains only nine villas spaced out in landscaped gardens, you stay in our favourite, just a few paces from the beach with views from the breezy veranda right out to sea. When it comes to getting away from it all on an deserted Brazilian beach whilst enjoying modern comforts then this hotel is the dream location. For a rustic beach villa it is rather well equipped with DVD player, surround sound, Jacuzzi and high cotton count linen on your king size bed. The restaurant is excellent and breakfast is a special treat. Nothing is too much for the friendly staff here who will deliver meals to your room and refreshing drinks to your chosen spot on the beach.

Next, you move inland to the beautiful Brazilian interior and the state of Minas Gerais. Your expansive hacienda is set in an incredible Brazilian landscape of mountains, waterfalls and forests for you to explore and has an endless list of activities for you to partake in, including fly-fishing, horse riding, mountaineering, hiking and canoeing. It is an all-inclusive arrangement (though don’t let that term throw you off) the few lucky guests receive three delicious home cooked meals every day and are free to take from the kitchen & larder as they please, all food and drink including beer and spirits are included in the rate. This is getting away from it all par excellence!

The Fazenda or farmhouse has a grand dining room, a library to unwind in and tables for cards after dinner. The 5 bedroom suites are 500 sq. Ft upwards and have large, comfortable beds, linen sheets, slate and marble bathrooms from the region and are individually decorated, each with its own unique, secluded outdoor area. A focal point to the property is the covered outdoor sitting room, with an array of tropical plants and water features, that leads on to a vast slate lined swimming pool fed with running spring water. Beneath is a private underground cinema and beyond is a croquet lawn set in a beautiful ten-acre garden full of mature fruit and nut trees, whilst set to the side of the Fazenda are the large and well equipped stables, home to local Criollo horses.

A superb breakfast is presented on the large veranda each morning, from which you watch parakeets fluttering around the orange trees that produced the juice you are drinking. The estate produces its own organic food, estate-bottled honey, sugar, jams, hot pepper sauce etc. Lunch can be enjoyed relaxing by the pool; however, you may prefer to pick a secluded spot on the estate (perhaps a tranquil waterfall or stream) for a picnic; appearing by horseback at the time you specify, staff will lay out an abundant spread of roast meats, breads, fresh salads, ice cold drinks and silver utensils for you to enjoy at your leisure. Dinner is served in the dining room and is always a merry occasion, whole sizzling roasts are standard fare, showing the owner’s passion for excellence in this most idyllic and remote location.

Luxury Honeymoon to Brazil and Uruguay by Dehouche Travel

You will begin your honeymoon on the Costa Verde, the beautiful stretch of coastline between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. You stay in a unique location where the pousada is top quality, yet you are in a genuine fishing village where the locals are wonderfully friendly. The rainforest stretches down to meet the beach to create a very romantic setting. This location is perfect for a mix of beach relaxation together with a glimpse of unspoilt Brazil with some fantastic natural pursuits on the mainland and nearby islands. There are countless islands dotted around the idyllic bay, many with bars and restaurants on. This makes for a fantastic genuine Brazilian honeymoon experience where you get a real feel for the people and culture of the country. The Pousada where you stay is set up high on the hill with wonderful views out across the bay and out to sea. With over 360 secluded islands in the broader bay area ones time can be spent on the countless superb beaches and islands of the area accessed by boat or jeep. There is never a shortage of things to do: enjoying the sunset at a beach restaurant on one of the many uninhabited islands, stunning jungle treks, swimming in waterfalls, or chilling out in refreshing natural pools.

If you are after culture, nearby is the enchanting colonial town of Parati - which is a UNESCO world heritage site due to the entirety of its colonial architecture and the charm of it’s cobbled streets. This is the perfect place for fine dining and antique shopping. We’ll make sure you access the best the area has to offer.

For the Uruguayan leg of your luxury honeymoon in South America you will fly down to Punta del Este. When fashionable people talk about Punta Del Este what they normally mean is José Ignacio, which is a small fishing village that has become popular with the rich and stylish for its laid back and unpretentious atmosphere. This is the current hotspot of South America where Hollywood stars and fashion moguls mix with the unperturbed locals. The village, which you can explore down dusty tracks, has a very relaxed atmosphere. There is a unique mixture of high quality restaurants and laidback lowkey bars.

The beach is just 40 yards from the hotel and it is beautiful and unspoilt; a great place to relax, there are also many activities to get involved in, from kite surfing to windsurfing and horse riding along the beach. You will stay in a stylish hotel, which is one of only two in the village. It has a beautiful pool area with a wet bar. The service is excellent, all of these factors combined make this the perfect spot to end your South American honeymoon.

Luxury Brazilian Tailor Made Honeymoon by Dehouche Travel

South American travel experts Dehouche Travel offer the ultimate in bespoke trips across the continent. For example a typical luxury honeymoon will start off on the island paradise of Fernando de Noronha, 350km off the coast of Brazil. A marine sanctuary and national park that is still untouched by mass tourism. One of the world’s most romantic destinations, on the many breathtaking beaches, to be discovered down sandy lanes through the lush vegetation you will probably be the only person for miles. Not to mention the crystal clear warm waters (visibility up to 50m) and marine life which make this a scuba diver’s heaven. For a really special moment in this beautiful setting Dehouche will arrange for a champagne picnic to be laid out for you in a secluded bay, to where you will both be whisked in a speed boat from your exclusive luxury pousada.

To delve deeper into this vast country, such idyllic beach locations are often combined with less visited city or countryside locations. E.g. visitors to Bahia are taken well off the beaten track, flying by light aircraft deep into the interior of Brazil, to Chapada Diamantina, a land of underground rivers, cacti and table-top mountains. Dehouche arranges for you to be based in a charming colonial village nestled in this unspoilt dramatic landscape, to explore the region with your enthusiastic local guide, Jorge. Visit huge underground cave systems, some flooded and diveable, abseil down underground waterfalls, swim in pure crystalline streams, or simply take in the stunning scenery from one of the many plateaus, a fantastic reward for venturing to this little visited area.

No visit to Brazil is complete without a visit to one of the country’s great cities from the colourful colonial architecture and vibrant Afro Brazilian culture of Salvador (also home to Brazil’s wildest carnaval) to the sophisticated metropolis of Sao Paulo, the world’s greatest multicultural melting pot with Brazil’s top restaurants and chicest nightlife:

How to create a perfect Honeymoon in Brazil by Dehouche Travel

You will begin your honeymoon in Fernando de Noronha, which is an island paradise 330km off the northeast coast of Brazil. UNESCO have measured the air here as the second purest in the world after the Arctic. With its crystal-clear water (visibility up to 52m & average water temperature of 24°C) and rich marine life, the archipelago is a paradise for snorkelers and scuba-divers, offering a huge choice of exciting dives for all levels. This important marine sanctuary is truly one of the most special places on the planet, and it remains still undiscovered by mass tourism. You stay in one of just 8 luxury private chalets with a Jacuzzi on the balcony and a beautiful view to the bay, a very romantic setting for the start of your honeymoon.

When you wake on your first morning there will be a beach buggy waiting in the car park; this will enable you to explore the island at your leisure. Some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world are at the end of the island’s dusty tracks, many of which are deserted and you will have to yourself; some have a wooden shack selling coconuts, beer and caipirinhas and there are few other people. The island social scene is easy to get involved in if you want to. It ranges from excellent restaurants with cracking sea views to full moon parties on the beach. Pousada Maravilha the exclusive boutique hotel is an absolute favorite and has a staff of 45 looking after a maximum of 22 guests – get ready to be pampered! - Truly the most idyllic place to begin your dream honeymoon.

Next, you will return to the mainland to spend a few days in Olinda. Set on a hill overlooking the sea and a large bay, this is Brazil’s best preserved colonial town where you’ll have a chance to experience the colour the African influence brings to Brazil’s North East. The town is truly delightful to explore; cobbled streets lined with historic but well kept buildings lead to fascinating shops and some exquisite restaurants. As you might expect of a town encircled by palm trees and chilled with a refreshing sea breeze, the locals are laid back and the pace of life is slow.

Your hotel here is a real gem, with beautiful antique furniture and four-poster beds. Set on a bluff overlooking the sea, it also enjoys excellent views across the town. The next morning your local guide Joao will return to give you a tour of Recife’s stunning old town and Olinda’s splendid colonial churches, and to introduce you to some of the local characters as well.

Finally, you head south to Rio de Janeiro, South America’s most exciting city. Here you will stay in a luxury boutique hotel set in an exclusive hillside neighborhood where you have a beautifully decorated suite with a veranda that commands panoramic views of the sea; this is arguably the most spectacular room in Rio. This is a very different experience from the large chain hotels on the beachfront - the staffs here are excellent and the hotel is immaculate and luxurious with beautiful communal areas and a pool for you to relax by. Despite being based in a city the secluded but easily accessible location means that you have the peace, quiet and exclusivity usually associated with more rural locations; monkeys can often be seen swinging in the trees that surround the hotel whilst breakfast can be enjoyed outside on the stunning veranda, which also provides breathtaking views.

Although a 15 minute taxi ride from the most famous beach areas, the hotel is close to one of Rio’s hidden secrets, a small beach that is sheltered by a cliff face and is rapidly becoming the beach to be seen at for fashionable cariocas.

Adventurous honeymooners! by Dehouche Travel

Dehouche, the specialists in luxury tailor made honeymoons across the South American continent organise many different adventurous experiences for couples who want more than just idyllic deserted beaches. For example what could be more romantic than a private boat trip down the Amazon. Dehouche’s favourite way to experience this unique environment is a luxury trip on your own private river boat. Itineraries are tailor made to any length of time, along the Amazon and its tributaries. Accompanied by an experienced guide, captain and a superb cook who creates culinary masterpieces from the abundant mouth watering local ingredients, this is a wonderfully peaceful and personal way to experience the Amazon.

For the more adventurous still, the company organises personalised speedboat adventures deep into the Amazon far away from all human activity. Your guides set up camp in the evening, cook a basic but delicious dinner and take care of all chores seamlessly. You sleep in hammocks under the forest canopy far away from the 21st Century and the daily grind. By day you trek in the jungle, or explore down small tributaries by kayak, wildlife spotting or perhaps stopping to fish for piranhas or peacock bass.

On another honeymoon with a difference, some couples may opt to learn a new skill, for example Dehouche organises week long kite surfing courses on the remote north coast of Brazil, staying in the small village of Jericoacoara. Clients arrive by light aircraft, a dramatic flight over the rolling sand dunes and palm tree lined coast line, and then spend the week taking private lessons with one of the area’s best instructors (and ex-champion himself), to really get to grips with this unbelievably fun sport. Evenings are spent in the low key (but surprisingly good) sandy floored bars and restaurants of the village, or Dehouche can arrange for a private meal of local seafood served to you by candle light on the beach in front of your stilted hut.

Fabulous Honeymoon in Argentina and Brazil! - by Dehouche Travel

South America is one of the few continents in the world where in a single trip honeymoon couples can combine such diverse experiences as dramatic snow covered mountain scenery, tropical beaches and any range of environments in from some of the driest desert in the world to the planet’s most biologically diverse wetlands.

In the months of July through to September, after a stay in one of Buenos Aires’s chicest boutique hotels - with everything laid on by local luxury tour operator Dehouche from personal shoppers to an exclusive private dinner and wine tasting with an owner of one of Argentina’s top bodegas, couples might start their luxury honeymoon by flying down to the resort of Bariloche in the picturesque Lake District for five days skiing. With its dramatic scenery, uncrowded pistes and perfect dry snow conditions, the Andes have it all, you can experience world-class heli-skiing or learn to ski powder for the first time – tailored for any level of skier and with your own personal pilot and guide. At the end of a day skiing some of the driest powder you can find in the world, you will be rewarded with a satisfying Argentine steak and can retire to your cosy mountain lodge with a roaring fire and thick duvets. Wake the next morning to a breath-taking view of jagged peaks from every window.

Travelling into Brazil via the incomparable Iguaçu falls only for a stop over though to see the best bits – no need to share your honeymoon with the heaving masses, Dehouche clients often skip straight to the best beaches of Brazil’s northeast. The season dictates where to maximise sun, and in August they would recommend the trendy beach village of Praia da Pipa. Dehouche clients stay in surely one of the best hotel rooms in Brazil - a luxury colonial style chalet set among landscaped gardens and jungle, 5 minutes walk from one of the most stunning beaches on the coast. The waters of this dramatic coast line, north of Bahia, are frequented by rare marine turtles and dolphins, which you can spot from the beach. Natural swimming pools in the reefs and crystalline waters make for excellent snorkeling. Dehouche arrange for clients to have a speedboat at their disposal for the chance to swim with dolphins in the Baia dos Golfinhos, or stopping at deserted beaches to eat fresh oysters at a rustic waterside bar in a mangrove lined lagoon.

Wonderful Honeymoon Experiences in Brazil by Dehouche Travel

Dehouche, bespoke travel agents to the stars, are redefining luxury holidays on the South American continent. Where high end travellers once stuck to Brazil’s rather tired international beach resorts and five star city hotels, of the sort found in Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Dehouche encourages their clients be they Honeymooners or vacationers seeking a luxury Brazilian itinerary to delve a little deeper into the country. For example in Rio de Janeiro couples often stay in a luxury catered penthouse in Leblon, naturally with a full concierge service and all the insider info to enjoy the city from a local’s perspective.

Many itineraries include a mixture of grand full luxury hotels with spas, restaurants, gyms etc. and simpler, more rustic pousadas in stunning, harder to get to locations this mix provides a lovely contrast and a deeper experience of Brazil. Nonetheless travellers who are willing to go the extra distance are often surprised at the level of luxury to be found in Brazil in incredibly remote locations often accessed only by light aircraft, helicopter or speedboat.

This is the case with Corumbau on Bahia’s stunning discovery coastline. On this idyllic beach, an hour from Porto Seguro by light aircraft, guests are rewarded with the ultimate in privacy. You can walk or cycle for hours on the palm tree lined beaches and not meet another living soul. Yet the remoteness certainly doesn’t mean any sacrifice in luxury. Dehouche clients stay in a resort of only nine chalets owned by an architect. The rooms are spacious and incredibly stylish, incorporating modern technology and creature comforts whilst fitting in harmoniously with the immaculate natural surroundings. In keeping with Dehouche’s philosophy the food as well, whilst prepared with natural, local ingredients (principally the organic vegetables from the hotel’s own garden and fish direct from the local fishermen), is some of the best in Brazil, modern, imaginative yet simple dishes which wouldn’t look out of place in one of Sao Paulo’s top restaurants.

Luxury honeymoon in Bahia state, Brazil's tropical North East by Dehouche Travel

A wonderful Brazilian Honeymoon begins in the stunning Chapada Diamantina National Park. Deep in the interior of Bahia lies a land of underground rivers, cacti and table-top mountains. Breathtaking hikes and mountain-bike trips are contrasted with dips into the many crystal clear streams and pools that are safe to drink from while swimming. The landscape is like something out of Lord of the Rings and the pace of life is easy to relax into. There are underground caves to explore and for the more adventurous, scuba diving deep into the caves is an option as is floating down the underground rivers. Based in a charming colonial village nestling in this unspoilt landscape one can explore this stunning region with a great fun English-speaking guide, Marcio is one of Dehouche Travel’s excellent team on the ground. Despite the small sleepy town being in the middle of nowhere there are some excellent restaurants dotted around, often it is really excellent home-cooking - a favourite recommendation has just 3 tables. Stay in a delightful converted colonial house, which is full of antique furniture and comfortable nooks to relax and unwind in.

Then return to Salvador the vibrant capital city of Bahia, where there’s a lot to do in a couple of days, from watching the impromptu displays of capoeira (the slave's athletic fight/dance routine) to attending Candomble rituals (this is an African religion that has deep roots in Salvador). The itinerary should be planned by Dehouche so that Honeymooners spend a Tuesday night in town, when the samba drums come out en masse – Pelourinho the historic old town turns into a street party with the best Bahian music, food and dance on every street.

Accomodation is quite sublime, set in a quiet side street, but walking distance from the heart of the historic centre and best restaurants. The hotel is a romantic old mansion house that effortlessly combines modern design features with colonial architecture. Suites are large and with four poster beds and boast a terrace that looks out across the famous Bay of all Saints.

A final destination on a perfect Brazilian honeymoon is a truly stunning location where couples can enjoy perfect unspoilt beaches, where palms and white sand meet the warm turquoise water, a genuine unspoilt tropical island paradise. Dehouche provide a speedboat that enables a fabulous day out on the sea an unforgettable journey around the islands, visiting natural swimming pools on sandy outcrops of the reef almost a mile offshore, where floating bars serve fresh fish and wonderful caipirinhas, unwind in the clear turquoise water where little tropical fish can clearly be seen. For lunch visit local character Guido who always has a fresh supply of lobster if one arrives early his family own an open-air restaurant on the beach that is an absolute must visit barbequed lobster and delicious Bahian specialties are to die for. The afternoon can be spent on deserted beaches, or swooshing up the river by speedboat to one of the first colonial towns in Brazil. As the sun sets the speedboat will drop the luck Honeymooners back at their beach front cabana. The team on the concierge on the ground can advise all the best things to see and do from where to see the dolphins playing in the bay as the sun sets, to where to get a view from the top of the island out across the bay and of course all the best restaurants and bars. Honeymooners stay in a wonderfully charming beach cabana right on the beach with an upstairs bedroom affording views straight out to sea, delicious breakfasts are served on the private veranda. This is an idyllic place to relax and forms a wonderful finale to a Brazilian honeymoon.

A perfect honeymoon in Argentina and Uruguay by Dehouche Travel

You will begin your honeymoon in Mendoza, recently selected as one of the world’s 8 wine capitals. Set right in the middle of the wine region the chic luxury lodge is only a stones throw away from award winning producers of Malbec and Torrontes wines, whilst the snow capped peaks of the majestic Andes frame the horizon.

The luxurious room has a private plunge pool and a large deck area with incredible views of the Andes. The hotel also has a spa service (including a wonderful crushed Malbec scrub) as well as numerous communal areas to unwind in. There is inevitably a great wine cellar from which lucky guests can enjoy award winning wines from all over Argentina. From here one can also visit many of the excellent local Bodegas that are close by, as well as going rafting, cycling and horse riding in this stunning region.

Next why not fly onto Argentina’s buzzing capital city. Although there is a fairly European look to Buenos Aires with its Parisian style avenues, grand squares and elegant cafés, it still has a strong South American feel, with relaxed and friendly locals. You stay in a boutique designer hotel in the trendy tree-lined streets of the Palermo Viejo district where all the best bars, restaurants and shopping are to be found. The hotel is a beautifully decorated location, with lots of antique pieces and special design features showing a real passion. The city is a real joy to explore with well preserved historic districts along with excellent nightlife and a relaxed café culture. Experienced local guide Ana the Dehouche expert on the ground provides a tailor-made tour of the city based on the client’s desires. She is great fun to be with and has access to many locations off the regular tourist trail. Clients will also have an extensively researched recommendations list of the best restaurants bars and nightclubs; this is provided for every destination of the honeymoon.

The final Argentinean location perfect for a romantic honeymoon will be Patagonia, a mythical landscape of clear blue lakes, dramatic peaks, green forests and enormous glaciers. Los Glaciares National Park, has 13 glaciers which end in the lakes of Viedma and Argentino. The biggest and most breath taking of them is the Perito Moreno glacier, which is 200 feet high and has an edge of 2.5 miles. Seen from any angle this is a breathtaking sight, a massive shining mass of ice edging its way slowly through the mountain valley, enormous splinters crumbling noisily into the icy water below. This is a place to experience the raw power of nature in its most impressive form. Dehouche Travel can help organise numerous types of trip into this unspoilt wilderness on horseback or 4x4, as well as trips across the lake amongst the many towering icebergs as well as hiking across the Moreno glacier itself. The best place to stay is in a charming rustic lodge decorated with beautiful antiques and located in the grounds of a large working estancia. This is a beautiful, tranquil spot and the food and service are outstanding.

When fashionable people talk about Punta Del Este, what they actually mean is José Ignacio; a small fishing village that has become popular with the rich and famous for its laid back, unpretentious attitude. This is the hotspot of South America where fashion models and Hollywood stars mix with the delightfully unflustered locals. The result is a unique mixture of high quality restaurants and laid back rustic bars. The village itself is great fun to explore down dusty tracks and has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere a perfect end to a special Honeymoon.
